Green Graphite Technologies to scale up GraphRenew™ technology, bolstering Canada’s critical minerals value chain and supporting the growing EV industry.

Kingston, Canada, October 15, 2024

Green Graphite Technologies Inc. (GGT) is thrilled to announce that it has been awarded $3.5 million in contribution funding through Natural Resources Canada’s (NRCan) Critical Minerals Research, Development and Demonstration (CMRDD) program. This investment will enable GGT to scale up its innovative GraphRenew™ technology, which focuses on transforming graphite from secondary sources into high-grade, battery-ready graphite.

The funding was unveiled on September 4th during a media event in Kingston, Ontario, where NRCan announced support for two groundbreaking projects under the CMRDD Program. This event highlighted the continued commitment of the Government of Canada to advance technologies that are crucial to the development of a sustainable and competitive critical minerals value chain.

Driving Innovation in Critical Minerals Recycling

GGT’s GraphRenew™ technology represents a breakthrough in the recycling of graphite, an essential component in lithium-ion batteries. By converting secondary sources of graphite into high-purity material, GGT’s project aims to close the loop in the graphite value chain, reducing waste and enhancing the sustainability of battery production in Canada.

“It’s crucial to understand and demand that the materials needed to produce EVs be sustainably produced,” said Gillian Holcroft, CEO of Green Graphite Technologies Inc. “We don’t want to solve one problem and end up creating several new ones. As a chemical engineer and President of Green Graphite Technologies, my co-founders and I are proud to be commercializing a technology that will make a meaningful difference to our society and demonstrate that Canadian companies are leading the way to a sustainable future. Thank you NRCan, for your support, which is key to advancing the rapid commercialization of our patented, transformative technology.”

GGT will continue its close collaboration with Kingston Process Metallurgy Inc. (KPM), one of its key development partners, in this project. Their experience, reputation and dedicated team will be instrumental in rapidly moving this much needed technology along the commercialization path.

Strengthening Canada’s Critical Minerals Value Chain

As the global demand for electric vehicles and clean technologies continues to rise, the need for a reliable and sustainable supply of critical minerals is more pressing than ever. GGT’s project will play a vital role in strengthening Canada’s critical minerals value chain, reducing reliance on imports and supporting the transition to a low-carbon economy.

About the Critical Minerals Research, Development and Demonstration (CMRDD) program

NRCan’s CMRDD program is a key component under the Canadian Critical Minerals Strategy. The program provides federal funding to support projects that demonstrate innovative processing technologies, helping to advance the domestic critical minerals industry and support Canada’s economic and environmental goals.
