New tariff to level the playing field, favoring North American graphite supply chains and
GGT’s go-to-market strategy.
Montréal, Canada, 22 July 2025
On July 17th, the United States Department of Commerce announced its preliminary affirmative determination in the antidumping duty investigation of Active Anode Material (AAM) from the People’s Republic of China and recommended the imposition of a 93.5% antidumping tariff against over 60 Chinese AAM exporters. This would raise the total tariffs on Chinese exports of AAM to the US to 160%. A lithium-ion battery (LiB) contains 15 times more AAM compared to lithium.
As a future North American AAM manufacturer, in collaboration with our graphite mining and LiB recycling partners, Green Graphite Technologies (GGT) welcomes this preliminary ruling. GGT’s Cofounder & CEO, Gillian Holcroft, had the following to say:
This decision, once implemented, will finally level the playing field and enable fair competition between North American and Chinese AAM producers, enabling the United States and Canada to onshore critical mineral midstream supply chains and bolster national security.
The total tariff is set to create a much-needed opportunity in the North American energy market by making locally sourced AAM more cost-effective than Chinese imports. Holcroft added:
Our patented environmentally sustainable graphite purification technology reduces the operating costs by 50% compared to the traditional hydrofluoric acid process, while lowering the carbon footprint of Chinese imported AAM by over 80%. With our compelling value proposition and with these tariffs, GGT is well positioned, along with its collaborators, to be the leading supplier of battery-grade graphite to the North American marketplace.
GGT has launched a US$7 million equity financing round to support the second ‘pre-commercial’ phase of its technology demonstration.
